DVD Review - Samurai Girls

January 26th, 2012

Imagine if you will, a man standing on a small bridge in a dojo in what can best described as alternative reality of Japan known as Great Japan. A time where the Tokugawa Shogunate, the era of feudal Japan that prohibited contact with the rest of the world among many other things, is still in power when suddenly a bright ball of light appears in the sky. The light descending towards this perplexed man, who we later find out is the main male protagonist of the series, is made even more confused moments later when he discovers a naked unconscious lady inside this ball of light who addresses him as 'big brother' (as in biological brother, not a term of affection), & then kisses him. This is the opening scene of Samurai Girls, the latest release by Kaze in the UK. Keep reading →

Astro Boy appears during the biggest wrestling event in Japan at the Tokyo Dome!

January 6th, 2012

This past Wednesday, 4th January, the biggest professional wrestling event in Japan at the 55,000 seater Tokyo Dome entitled 'Wrestle Kingdom VI' took place. Featuring some of best wrestlers from all over the globe this was truly one of grandest stages in wrestling and biggest event on the Japanese wrestling calendar. What has this got to do with anime you ask? A very well known anime character made an appearance to accompany four wrestlers to ringside during that very show.

Mighty Astro, who we know better as Astro Boy, was present at the Tokyo Dome with classic footage of him flying was displayed on two giant screens (see below) before making his way down to the ring while accompanying his team that included legendary Japanese wrestler Tiger Mask, a persona that was based on the popular manga serialisation of the same name during the late 60's and a 105 episode anime series in the early 70's. REVIEW - K-On! Volume 3

November 28th, 2011

Following two previous volumes showing the creation of the Light Music Club and how difficult it can be to prepare for a performance and, in some cases, actually playing an instrument, we arrive at the third slice of cake (a small in joke there) in a quartet of releases for this series.

This time a new student has joined the Light Music Club as Asuza quickly finds out that despite having good intentions in joining the club it isn't exactly what she expected. This cross road becomes apparent very early on and is the main focus in the first episode on this DVD release by Manga Entertainment. Keep reading →

November 14th, 2011

Details have finalled been revealed about the upcoming and will no doubt very popular 20th Anniversary concert by Japanese rockers L'arc en ciel on Wednesday 11th April 2012 at the IndigO2 venue in London.

Ticket will go on general sale this coming Thursday (17th November). There is a fanclub pre-sale on a first come first served basis that we have been granted access to and we can tell you now that there are two tiers of ticket pricing available. The first is what we'll call the General Admission price which will set you back £50 plus a £5 service charge (not including postage.) Then there is a VIP ticket which appears to grant you access to a special standing section or special seating allocation depending on your preference when ordering. We are currently unaware if there is anything extra included in this package but a VIP ticket will set you back £100 plus an £11 service charge (again not including postage.)

As mentioned tickets will be put on general sale this coming Thursday. The link to go to once general sale has begun is HERE.

A recommendation from us. We strongly suggest if you haven't done so already that you register an account with Ticketmaster prior to Thursday if you're thinking of getting tickets. You will likely have to do so either way when ordering and it can take a good few minutes to do. If you're paying by Visa you will need to know your password and/or details of your 'Verified By Visa' security check service before paying.

Review - The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya DVD

November 7th, 2011

It's very easy to get despondent. It's happened to us all, even if we're in the middle of something we know we always wanted to be a part of. Sometimes we held our expectations too high, and sometimes we were never really sure what we wanted in the first place, and the despondency is purely a result of our coalescing feelings. Either way, you can be stuck wondering how you got to this point when all you've tried to do is the right thing.

It's kind of an odd statement to start an anime review with; probably something you're more akin to seeing on a personal blog, but for me it was a really important part of the Suzumiya movie, released today in the UK by Manga Entertainment. And, if you're aware of my ambivalence towards the Haruhi series as I reviewed it however many episodes ago on our podcast, you might think I'm about to give a duff review. I'm actually happy to report that this is the sort of experience I was looking for with earlier Haruhi episodes, and I think this is so far the highest point the franchise has offered to its (somewhat) polarised viewers. An Introduction To ‘Animetal USA’

November 1st, 2011

When it comes to Anime one aspect of a series that cannot be ignored is that of the opening and closing title sequences. They utilise songs from readily established artists and relative unknowns. It could well be that having a song used in an anime series propels an artist to new heights from the wide exposure a series can bring.

But there was a group by the name of Animetal that went down a different route. The group used their power metal influences to create their own take on various anime songs. (Power metal is best described as very fast metal that can be combined with a symphonic instrument such as a keyboard. A popular example of a power metal band is Dragonforce who emanate from the UK.) From the opening theme to Sailor Moon 'Miracle Romance' to the Dragon Ball Z song 'Cha La Head Cha La' they went on to record over ten studio albums between 1996 and 2006. Some of these albums included Mie from the popular group Pink Lady. In fact these albums featuring Mie were released under the name of Animetal Lady, pictured right, making a clear reference to the fact she was on the record. Despite the name change they are still included as part of the discography of Animetal. Keep reading →

Article - Fullmetal Alchemist vs Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: Which is the Definitive Series?

October 20th, 2011

One of my fondest and strongest anime memories was attending the London Expo back in 2003 (or 2004, I can’t remember) when Fullmetal Alchemist was first being released in the UK. I sat in the ExCeL Centre’s little screening booth and watched the first episode and instantly saw a whole new world of potential opened before me. I’d never seen anything like it before, and nothing’s ever struck me that hard or deeply since. The whole experience was just thrilling. I knew it didn’t follow the manga all the way through, but seeing as I didn’t own any of that, it wasn’t my concern, and I (rather callously, considering I’m a writer myself) dismissed the original author’s work, considering the anime I saw to be all I needed. Admittedly, I slightly preferred the anime’s artwork too, but anyway.

So when I heard they were essentially making the same series again, I was a little puzzled, a little annoyed, and all but dismissed it, thinking I knew the story already and didn’t need to bother watching it all over again for a few minor changes. That is, until I was bought Volumes 1 and 2 for Christmas last year... Keep reading →
